US pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly is threatening to disrupt existing Australian guardrails protecting consumers from regulated health services by dispensing GLP-1 medication Mounjaro through its online portal directly to patients’ homes. Mounjaro has the potential to tackle the growing burden of type 2 diabetes and fight obesity. But like most medications for chronic disease, it doesn’t target the root causes shaped by environmental and individual risk factors. Serious side effects can include xerostomia (dry mouth) and gastrointestinal issues, and both symptoms create the perfect environment to develop tooth decay, erosion, and tooth sensitivity. Health Economist and Oral Health Therapist, Tan Nguyen, says “From a public health perspective, GLP-1 medications need face-to-face continuity of care. From an economic standpoint, Eli Lilly’s proposal is a distraction from the critical government investment needed for implementing effective preventive interventions. It is a direct challenge to Australia’s worldclass Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) focused on equity and value for money.”
